The man behind the library

Before his name was on the library, Max Rogers was the person many people turned to when they wanted to understand a family, a house or a piece of local history. He joined the Society in 1995, became its librarian that year and took on the role of research officer in 1999.

Born in Orange in 1937, Robert Maxwell Rogers worked in newspapers before joining the Sydney Morning Herald as a linotype compositor. After retiring to Bowral, he brought the same care for words and detail to the Society’s archives. He built the library’s collection, donated books and gave generously of his time to researchers.

The Royal Australian Historical Society recognised his contribution in 2006, and the Society made him an honorary life member in 2009. After his death in 2017, the research library was named in his honour. Read the Society’s tribute · The library’s naming
