Keeping the evidence and the stories.

Founded in 1960, the Berrima District Historical & Family History Society Inc supports historical and genealogical research, maintains its research library and archives, and operates Berrima District Museum.

Before the Society had a home of its own, members met in rooms in Bowral and Moss Vale. Foundation member Janet Cosh catalogued the growing collection and kept the archives at her home. In the 1970s a donated cottage was moved from Moss Vale to Market Place in Berrima; it became the district museum, opening to visitors in December 1976. The archives found a room in Berrima Court House before moving to Mittagong in 1982. Today the research centre and Max Rogers library are in Moss Vale, while the museum continues to welcome visitors in Berrima.

Much of what researchers can find today rests on years of volunteer work. Clarice Boyd read through old local newspapers and created a card index of district stories. Other members later entered that index into a searchable database, preserving a path into the lives and events recorded in the papers.
