Picnic day at the works

The company newsletters are full of life beyond the factory. The 1975 volume records the Berrima works picnic sports of 8 December 1974, from toddlers’ races and wheelbarrow races to a tug-of-war won by Berrima Maintenance. Its results preserve the names of many families who shared the day.

The old chimney comes down

One of the early landmarks of the cement works disappeared when the chimney serving No. 1 kiln was demolished. The company newsletter recalled its origins in the late 1920s and reported that No. 1 kiln had left production when No. 5 kiln came into operation in 1964. Its photograph records the old stack surrounded by scaffolding.
