Two Berrima working lives

Liol Bush joined the works as a 16-year-old laboratory sample boy in 1934, two days after leaving school. By 1976 he had worked in the laboratory, production and transport, and helped establish the employees’ credit union. The newsletter set his story alongside that of John Zaranski, who arrived from Poland after the war and advanced through the works to become production foreman.

The engines that served the works

Long before the company newsletter looked back on them in 1976, two steam locomotives had already led busy lives on the New South Wales railways. Built by Beyer Peacock and placed in service in 1891, locomotives 1111 and 2018 were later bought by Southern Portland Cement and worked at Berrima. The newsletter recalled their earlier use on suburban and branch lines.
