On 15 May 1979, guests arrived by special train and toured the new plant before Premier Neville Wran declared it open. The company newsletter recalled balloons, fireworks and a gathering beneath the huge kiln; its colour photographs bring the occasion back to life.

Concrete earns an award
Later that year the Concrete Institute of Australia recognised the use of concrete in Berrima’s No. 6 kiln development. The company newsletter reproduced one of the photographs submitted with the entry: the raw meal blending silo beside the tall preheater structure. The award account gives a sense of the scale and design of a changing works.
