Railway, orchards and land sales
Between Bargo and Yerrinbool, Yanderra’s story follows the railway and the old road between Sydney and the Southern Highlands. The locality lies in Wollondilly, where many of its community and council records are held.[6]
After the railway deviation of 1919, Arthur Rickard & Co promoted the Yanderra Estate to Sydney residents as a healthy highland retreat. Yanderra’s own station opened in 1924, providing a rail connection for the growing locality until passenger services ended in 1975. The estate advertisements offered a vision of a new community; the records of its roads, farms, school and church tell a richer story of what followed.[3][13]
Trove catalogues an Arthur Rickard & Co private-sale map for Yanderra Estate held by the State Library of NSW, call number Z/TP/Y2. The catalogue gives a broad publication date and does not establish whether this is the particular advertisement discussed in the 1925 transport history. Consult the original plan and its access conditions to investigate lot boundaries and sales terms.[7]
A December 1924 newspaper report of Wollondilly Shire business records the engineer inspecting roads in the Yanderra Estate with surveyor A. R. Dawson and contractor A. Graham. The engineer reported the road work satisfactory and the plan was endorsed. A 1930 newspaper sales list attributed several numbered Yanderra Estate lot sales to Arthur Rickard & Co.; such agent reports give leads into transactions but should be checked against deeds and deposited plans.[8][9]
The 1938 Parish of Bargo map shows the wider railway corridor, road network, land portions and water-supply reserves in the Bargo district. A later NSW government notice identifies land at Yanderra in the parish; the parish map is regional context, not proof of the boundaries or development of a particular Yanderra block.[10][11]

A village community
A 1937 report in The Methodist describes residents gathering outdoors before building a church. It says Arthur Rickard and Co. made a corner site available for a nominal sum, an unused building at Bargo was bought, and local volunteers erected the church, opened on 4 September 1937. The report’s claim about the timing of estate subdivision should be compared with the earlier 1924 road-plan record.[12]
The district’s orchards and flowers appear in the same transport history. In December 1941, a railway pay vehicle was destroyed by an explosive device near Yanderra, killing its three occupants. The transport account says the attempted robbery was never solved. This episode forms part of a wider story of the people who worked on and travelled along the railway.[3]
Wollondilly Council describes a small residential settlement with a primary school surrounded by bushland. The school’s own site is a starting point for current information; historical admission, community and local newspaper records may add the names and experiences of families over time.[4][5]
