School registers

School admissions can connect children, parents, places and working lives. Begin with these finding aids and compare every finding with its source.

Families behind the school gates

A child’s admission can place a family in a community at a particular moment. In the Yarrunga transcript, names sit alongside ages, parents or guardians and occupations: clues that can lead from a school desk to a farm, a family story or a neighbouring district.

At Glenquarry, families sought a local school when children faced long journeys to other schools. The Society’s admissions indexes carry that story into the twentieth century. Search either finding aid, follow the page link to its source, and ask the Society about records that are not included in the online index.

School photographs can bring another dimension to the names. In 2012 Glenn Miller donated two Berrima Public School class photographs kept by his family, showing pupils in 1950 and 1951. The Society invited readers to help identify the faces: a reminder that a school photograph can start a conversation across generations.
